Menaikkan Wang di Zon Tengah.

dum dee dum. HERE I AM! hahahaha. guess who.

*cough cough*.

okay. um, moving on...

you see right, there was this sunday. 23rd of November. then there was this bunch of kids who were too free and had nothing better to do (except for the poor SPM-ers). they decided one day that, "Hey! Let's do some fund-raising for camp!"

...HAHA. not really. i'm not sure whose idea it was. BUT we did have the fund-raising.

to raise funds one needs stuff to sell right?? well, we had PLENTY. and the stuff was awesome too, might i add. we had lotsa foooooooooddddd...
- nasi lemak (by sarahW and eulene, my fav food, i tell ya)
- jelly (by debra and ming yen, which was uber tasty!)
- homemade cookies! (by le anne and ruth, see pic below)
- nuggets and sausages (by tania and weilynn, for the wee ones)
- leong fan and soya (not sure by who, but managed by elisha and jinji and parents, also awesommeeeeee!)
the rest of us helped to promote (or make a lot of noise) while leroy and danteoh (and sharon and mingyen) sat down and sang. they opened up a guitar case too! so people can put their money in of course. my dad said that they made at least RM500 just by singing. WOWWWWWEEEE. heheh.

this was us setting up the stalls and stuff. sorry there's not much pictures...eulene was too busy checking out guys. (HAHAHAhahaaa...)
i'm sorry if the report is too short too (sorry Ed!), cause i currently have a little writer's block. haha. and also a little rushy to do something. SORRRY!! anyway, most of you were there. i don't need to elaborate all that much. =)
(those who weren't, eat your heart out! heh. :D)

anyway...the conclusion is, we had lotsa fun. we always do, right fireBRANDS?? yeah.

btw...the total amount collected: RM1554. (say wow!)

fireBRAND of the Fortnight 002

Nope, I haven't forgotten.

But first, most importantly, the fine print:

Disclaimer: The fireBRAND of the Fortnight, and every fireBRAND of the fortnight hereafter, is chosen randomly by www.firebrands-irri.blogspot.com. Any loss of life, injury, damage, or any form of loss incurred is at the risk of the readers and the fireBRAND of the Fortnight. www.firebrands-irri.blogspot.com hereby declares that it is not responsible for any and for all of the casualties above. The contents of every fireBRAND of the fortnight post, hereinafter referred to as fBotF, are deemed true and accurate at the time of posting. Any false information found to be in fBotF will be dealt with appropriately.

The laureate for this fortnight is...
...ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you..

...Mr Elisha Low Kai Yong!

So, in the spirit of fBotF, I, being the hardworking one, asked others this one question (to obtain constructive answers, of course):

What do you think of Elisha?

Sarah Wong
Elisha... He's a great guy. And I salute anyone who ends up being his wife. He LOVES his family, respects them, even his little brother, and he's willing to spend his holidays working in a dodgy little aircond-less, by-the-roadside photo shop so that he can earn money to help his mom and friends out with youth camp fees.......... wow......... All I can say is, "Awwww........ Elisha, you're AMAZING!"

Benjamin Tham
Lol I dunno... [the Ed: How's he like as an LCD mentor to you?] haha I dunno [...] I say a good man?

James Tan
I think he's a guy who's humble and meek. When it comes to doing things I think he'll do it all out. He's the kind of person you can trust when you hand him a job.

Pastor Cowan Yuen
He's like a panda! Near extinction. [the Ed: So he should reproduce and get offspring?] Spiritual offspring! [rephrasing] He's like a panda coz he has more white than black. But through Christ, he'll be a polar bear! White as snow and very macho from the inside out.

Tan Wei-Lynn
Good LCD guy? Lol.. Ermm.. Nice? Hardworking i guess... Considering he's taking a holiday job just to pay for AYC. [more thinking] First impression is kind.

Joyce Lim
I think he's awesomely organised. Hardworking. Funny at times haha. Dedicated. And he should continue smiling like crazy person.

Sharon Leow
I think Elisha's a very sensitive young man! And it's a good thing!

Beverly Wong
I think he's really helpful around. He can tell really, really long stories. He's really funny. [thinking] He's pretty tall and eats quite a lot. [thinking somemore] I find... uh... he's really, really good doing the LCD. He can... He's a pretty good leader, in a way lah...

Daniel Teoh
He's okay... [thinks hard] He is a... very... able person. Umm... ummm.. multitasker. He is a very people's person.

Eulene Ooi
He's a very great leader, very responsible
.. I dunno.. What did I say? [reminds herself] Um.. He's very.. um.. hardworking. I dunno. Full of ideas... That's all I can say.

Julia Tan
[just woke up] Uhh.. crap. Don't write that. Wait.. wait.. wait. He's kind. Uhh.. I don't know. I really don't know. I dunno how to describe.

Justin Loh
Uhh.. He's a very, very awesome person. He helps a lot. Can be very quiet but actually he talks a lot... Can be pretty lame...

Tham Khai Hern
[in the zoo] Okay lah... Like that lahh.. [the Ed: call me back later?]
[later] Like that lo.. Helpful lo.. Umm.. then.. helpful lo... Nice person, helpful person.

Leroy Tan
Great leader, I guess. Weird. Um.. Someone who's willing to do something even before there's a need, already willing to volunteer himself. Does things without complaining.

Tan Le Anne
Dedicated to his work. [watching tv show] He's quiet.. He has potential to be a leader.. His heart's in the right place.
[Added on later] Elisha is passionate, hardworking, dedicated. Those [are the] skills of a leader. And he's humble. That I know [the Ed]'ll agree with me. He's TOO kind and helpful. He he.

Chan Ming Yen
Errrrrrrrrrrrrr... What a random question. Wow.. he's a guy. [laughs] He likes to help. Very helpful. Umm... [thinking] Can you give me another person? [the Ed: Uh.. No..] When you give him something to do he'll do it really well... do it attentively.

Pastor Victor
I think he's hardworking, focused... At the same time, often overwhelmed by work.

Andrew Chan
Errrrr... Fun and always high-spirited.

Lim Jin Ji
Well, he's very patient and a good teacher. He's also very responsible.

And finally, most importantly:

Tricia Yeoh
...O.o He's a nice guy with a real passion for Christ.

Oops. I meant...
.. And finally, most importantly:

Elisha Low
[at work at the photo shop] I think that I am... dunno wor.. I'm just natural.. uhh I'm responsible, I'm mature, I'm hardworking, diligent, loyal, I think that's all.

So, that's it.
Took up the latter part of my afternoon.
Anyways.
You endure another fortnight.
I'll enjoy that fortnight, before getting down and dirty writing on another fireBRAND.

Decidedly Pictureless

Dedicated to all you linguists who appreciate the art of English, and therefore have no need for photos, colours, and all things wacky.

Just plain awesome words.

After all, it would be so utterly redundant to post up photos, considering the fact that you've been there and seen all that there is to be seen.
Unless, of course, you weren't there.
So, lesson one: Go for youth service.

Pre-service prayer was as normal (not that normal is bad, normal can be good): groups of 3-5.
Ended with 10 minutes to spare. Wow.

Icebreaker. Involved pairing up and trying to step on the other person's toe. After the first round, almost everyone decided to masquerade as the few people who put up their hands when asked "Who didn't step on each other's toes?" for the sake of going back and sitting down, ignoring the fact that they did have fun.
Which left the host in an awkward position, thinking, 'I don't understand your ignorance.'
Thankfully, there were a few good sports who voluntarily came up again and entertained the bunch of [adjective goes here] people.

Next up, worship.
Worship was awesome.
Really awesome.
God rocks.

Announcements.
Ong Eu-jeen is officially in the fireBRANDS worship team.
For all you kid-lovers who are excellent at working with kids and communicating with kids, do sign up to help Yan and Ming-Y at the House of Hope Christmas Programme (by Aunty Cheng See).

Sharon then got up and introduced all the JYR-related people (organizers, helpers, participants), applauding them.
Unfortunately for some weird reason, the certificates were... not there.
Next week?

Marilyn Kee, young preacher for the night, shared on the positive and negative aspects of fireBRANDS, from her point of view (behind those spectacles of hers).
Positive: We get along and 'gel' easily; we are warm to newcomers; we come to youth service with the right focus (God)
Negative: We look for events and happening stuff, we don't pay attention to what we label as 'boring'; we have cliques; we don't take the initiative to talk to other people beyond our clique; something about identity crisis?

And when it was just the right time to go back home and rest...

... up came Eulene Ooi and Sarah Wong with some odd (not that odd is bad, oddity can be good, in some cases) game.
Five groups. Five pieces of paper. Five odd words. Make a sentence/paragraph. Pass on last sentence to the next group. Another five odd words. Continue the odd story.
Finally, five odd masterpieces are produced.
Real odd.

However time was not very merciful, and she decided to bug a few parents, who in turn decided to bug James who bugged Pastor who got bugged and asked (I wanted to put 'begged', but it sounded inappropriate) for more time.

Though finally it did end, and the fireBRANDS (to say in Elisha-style) dispersed.

fireBRANDS would like to officially welcome JYR recruits Cherie, Carmen, Karin, Carin and a 15-year-old, Sally.

Long Overdue.

What to do? It (the report) was 'under construction'.

Report by: Sharon Leow

As to maintain the standards of being an active reporter, I am here to give you the report. Preferably, on today [Ed: 'today' meaning the 15th of November, 2008].

There’re just two words to describe tonight’s Youth service (Note: To those of you who weren’t paying much attention during the announcements – Youthwave [Under Construction] was on, mind you!) :

PLAIN AWESOME!

As much as the term right on top of you gives a pretty good description, I’m afraid you’ll have to live with me and the whole report. ([the Ed] would suck up my brain cells with a straw and start scooping up my eyes with a spoon as an appetizer, if I were to stop here!)

Note to self. Never sit at the back seat of the church van. It gives off too much fuel which sorta reminds me of GAS? Though, I personally think GAS smells alot better than fuel. Gahh!

But that’s not the point. Arriving at about 7.30 pm. at Fettes Park Baptist Church, let’s just say we were right on time. And I must say, Fettes Park Baptist Church really does have a way with being hospitable. It felt...homey, I gather.

Worship. Right...where shall I start? Worship was led by Mister-Guy-with-A-Red-Tie-who-plays-the-guitar (I do not know his name!) with newer songs.

Through the corners of my eyes, I could’ve sworn I saw many (among the congregation) were dwelling in the presence of God (I was worshipping too, mind you!). Ahhh...such a lovely sight, if you ask me. Truly, God’s presence was right there at that moment.

To those of you who weren’t there tonight, Pastor Matthew was a bomb, leaving me with my jaws open as he spoke (Well, not really. But I was pretty mesmerized.). Having him tonight did change my views on what I thought life really was. Life isn’t just the normal routine, by having to go through Kindy...Primary...Secondary...College...Uni...Job...Spouse...Kids...Maybe a few cars...and Die! That’s cow crap, if you ask me!

With his creative invention of having “Penang’s Got Talent”, he caught the crowd’s eye by calling up a few people (WHO WERE FORCED TO GO FORWARD) to showcase their talents. It was mind-boggling having to see a guy recite his ABC’s backwards, another two who could sing, one dancer, a drummer (Nehemiah, who knock all the pretty girls’ socks off –if they were wearing any!), a pianist (Joyce Lim) and a singer (Sharon Leow) who both willingly joined forces...to take over the world?

That wasn’t it, but yeah! The message was plain simple and sweet! Dreams which should never be thrown away and talents which should be used for the extension of God’s kingdom. And if you’re thinking that life’s just a simple routine with peachy events included, think again! Cause God has every intention of giving you the ride of your lifetime. God’s planning on giving you an adventure. You are special!

With everything said, I must say, tonight was another one of those successful, amazing, eye-popping nights! A memorable one which should always remain in our hearts. To those of you who’ve missed it: Wait for the next Youthwave. It’s not a long way away!

What is your dream?

TO DREAM A DREAM!

Pictures tell 1,000 words...

...so why not cut down on the words and ramp up the photos?

Photography: Sarah Khoo

Friday, the 14th of November 2008.
Of raw carrots, minced strawberries, and chawanmushi.

Ephraim's Cookoff
Guys v. Gals
note to the faithful reader: captions for each photo are underneath, not above, the photo.

Enter the guys (most of 'em not in this photo), the girls (brimming with confidence, in their element), and the despondent cell leader (exaggerated fictitious self-pity) who found out that the kitchen isn't big enough to accommodate a sudden attendance spurt in Ephraim.

You-know-him and you-know-her with the judging form.

Ruth Tham trying to operate a stove she wasn't supposed to operate (both teams only get two portable gas stoves).

Guys forced outside, considering the space restraints (it was quite fair actually: the outside floor is pretty clean and it's more spacious than the kitchen). The guys worked very, very well together, everyone with their own jobs, under the command of Head Chef Elisha Low. (Just ignore that part where three guys were frying one sausage at the same time.)

Future chef Benjamin Tham peeling potatoes, Eulene and Eunice there in the background spying on 'em guys.

Time for a SPECIAL GUEST to crash the cookoff...

Nope, wasn't him.

Him, more like. Tassiedevil Daniel Teoh, fresh from the airport. Came all the way just to join in, and ended up being a judge. An Ephraimite through and through. Either that or he's just a greedy jerk.

10:10p.m. in the gals' corner and we see FOOD. Sushi filled with fake crabsticks (they're actually made out of fish) and omelette.

10.15p.m. and the judging starts. Judges are, from left: Pastor Victor, Gordon Ramsay/The Naked Chef, domestic goddess Nigella Lawson, and Chef Wan.

And, just for the fun of getting all you people who weren't there jealous and to make your mouths water with the thoughts of the following sumptuous home-cooked food, here's what was on the menu:

Guys

1. The X-Drink: Bizarre mix of minced strawberries, sprite and orange. Failed to impress the discerning judges. Turned them off, actually.
2. Coke float: Coke with ice-cream on top. Nothing much to shout about, really.
3. Cheese-baked rice: By Jin Ji. Fry rice, top with
cheese, bake. Not bad. Not bad at all.
4. Mucha Cheesy: Mac 'n' cheese, basically. Pastor complained that it had a Mexican name but was an Italian dish, which was kinda misleading.

5. Mashed P. ala Ben: Awesome name, but kinda tasteless if you're not eating from the top, as Nigella discovered. (P. stands for Potato, if you're still lost.)
6. Eggy-eggy Chicken Chop: Deep-fried chicken chop with potato chips and some miscellaneous veggies (the kind you always get with Western Food
cooked by a hawker).

Gals
1. Lychee sorbet: Basically lychee blended with ice and a spritz of lime juice. Presentation was below average, but it tasted wayyy above average.
2. No-waste appetizer: Its very name makes it sound like leftovers, and yeah, it was leftovers of what they used for the sushi. Bits of omelette, crabstic
k, carrots, lime juice and whatnot all mixed together in a small bowl, creating what was surprisingly a pretty good concoction. Good for the conscience of any eco-warrior, too.
3. Chawanmushi: Like the one you get in Sushi Ki
ng. Steamed egg with crabstick and mushroom. A total hit with the judges; Nigella wanted one whole bowl for herself.
4. Macaroni & cheese: Your basic mac 'n' cheese (again!) baked in the oven. Quite okay, though Pastor sensed that something wasn't quite c
ooked in that dish...
5. Sushi: Sushi rolls (maki) with crabstick (kanikama) and sweet omelette (tamagoyaki). Fairly nice, for amateur sushi chefs.

Now that you know the above, to make you totally wish you were there (if you weren't), here's photos of the judges judging (well yeah, fishers fish, bakers bake, firemen fire, so judges judge) the food, and the competitors too:

Eulene striking a pose.

And, as if Eulene's confident pose with a hint of cockiness was next to predicting the future... the nfkwqpdk won, by a pretty slim margin.

Ah, yes. Gibberish. Unintelligible by all you readers, who still have yet to face the fact that we..
.. ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.
And ate.

And ate.
And ate.

And ate.

And ate.
And ate.
And ate.

Now, as I was saying:
And, as if Eulene's confident pose with a hint of cockiness was next to predicting the future... the girls won, by a pretty slim margin.

The Routine Which Is Never Routine

There're many things I still have yet to write/do, some of which I wish would float over the hills and rolling plains below towards the rainbow beyond the clouds, where none reside and none would see and none would ever, ever bother about those things.

Unfortunately, that'd never happen, so here goes.

Photography: Pastor Victor & James Tan

Reminisce upon icebreakers of the days of old, whence they were still done by Joyce and a few of her friends, and you'd come upon a firm favourite, the brainchild of tassiedevil Daniel Teoh: the slapping game.
okay okay, i'll stop using that boring tone, if you insist...
But first, a question: what DOES it take for you people to LISTEN during icebreakers? sheesh.
Anyways. Sit it (not one, but) two circles, cross-legged, next to each other, number yourselves, start calling out numbers, and start slapping.
Wind blows, and guess what? You can interchange between circles while keeping your number.
And in the end, like a very happy fairytale ending, we become one big oval and live happily ever after.
Unless, of course, someone becomes too passionate about the game and slaps too hard making the slappee cry and laugh at the same time.
No hard feelings, though. To lighten things up, we have... photos!

A future chef getting ready to slap someone. Note: even if you can see your face in there, mr justin loh shern cho, kindly refrain from commenting on and complimenting your outward beauty.

Cue a cute lil' girl to brighten up the atmosphere and make you :)

Moving on, worship.
Sharon started with a bang! with an inspirational speech that'd perk up even Martin Luther King's interest.
Songs were mostly based on the fact that we need Him.
And the worship was awesome not because of the musicians nor the worship leader but the fact that the people gave their all to Him, whether they could feel His presence or otherwise.

Announcements. In video.
THERE WILL BE NO YOUTH SERVICE IN CENTRAL ZONE NEXT WEEK.
INSTEAD, GO TO FETTES PARK BAPTIST CHURCH FOR 'UNDER CONSTRUCTION' ORGANISED BY YOUTHWAVE.
Let's hope you people noticed that.

Joshua Yeoh.
Now if you weren't there that night then that's a pity, cuz you just missed an opportunity to get this man's autograph. (Not that any of the attendees did, but still, you could've.)
Awesome would be an understatement to describe his sharing with the fireBRANDS that night. He totally left what to share in God's hands, and just.. talked, according to what God told Him to.
It started with dividing into groups of 4, and sitting like that:

That's Eulene with the ponytail, Sarah with the other ponytail, Ming Yen with the long curly hair, and Asher the thorn among the roses.

Sitting. Listening. (Now if only y'all were this angelic during icebreakers. What, I need to carry Leroy's guitar too, then it'll work? Hey LEROY! Guitar please...?)

Josh talked.
We prayed (interceded: stood in the gap) for the person on our right.
Josh talked.
Some people who were confident that they could hear God's voice prayed upon the others.
We prophesied (edify: build up, exhort: encourage, comfort: comfort lar) for each person in our group.
Testimonies were shared by Nehemiah, Justin, Cayton, Joyce.
Josh talked.
End. At nearly 10p.m.

Never invite Josh over to share, cuz he doesn't know what he's sharing about.

Hasrat murni Jabatan Pelajaran Malaysia...

Now you know what I'm talking about. SPM.

And with all the slogging, procrastinating, crying, grinning and lazing around over and done with, all one can do is pray and leave it in His hands.
But no one said they'd be praying alone, eh? Get my drift?

So, therefore, keep these SPM-ers in your prayers everyday. Some have been in fireBRANDS since a long, long time ago, some new faces, and some have disappeared for some time. Never mind that, whether you know 'em or not, just pray for them. After all, He knows them more than they know themselves.

Enough preachy-preachy from me for now, here're the names:
  • Joyce Lim
  • Justin Loh
  • Nehemiah (retaking)
  • Nicole Tan
  • Charis Ow
  • Emily
  • Evelyn
  • Imin
  • Vivian Chee
  • Samuel Chuah
  • Deborah Thong
That's it, any additions, well, just leave a comment.

fireBRAND of the Fortnight 001

Every person has a right to feel special, every person likes feeling special.
And so here we have: fireBRAND of the Fortnight. A special post every fortnight dedicated to a fireBRAND.

Now with that said and done, here we have, fireBR
AND of the Fortnight 001,...

... Beverly Wong Yu-Li!
A gal who puts herself forward to be confident and always puts her best foot forward. Sends chills down the spines of certain guys. Beneath that fierce exterior, she's actually quite likable. Though you might not want to provoke her...

the Ed: How do you feel, being nominated as the first fireBRAND of the Fortnight?
Beverly: lol.. surprised. hehe.
the Ed: Would you be surprised if Nehemiah got nominated instead?
Beverly: not really. hehe.

the Ed: Or are you only surprised because it's YOU?
Beverly: yea. kinda. hee... :D
the Ed: So if it was anyone else, you would not be surprised?
Beverly: Not really. Hee.
the Ed: Why's that?
Beverly: Erm...because you see, I'm really not that special in fireBRANDS. I'm just the loud one. That's all.
the Ed: Isn't being loud.. special? Not all people are loud.. more so as loud as you...
Beverly:
Not really. Cause there are other people that are louder than me. Hee... And sometimes people find me annoying because of my loudness. Hee.
the Ed: Okay, enough of that, we'll get some facts about you now. Any personal particulars you wish to let the whole world know?
Beverly: Not really. What's there to talk about me?
the Ed: I don't know.. your interests, DOB, anything at all?
Beverly: My interest not so sure. My date of birth don't you know?
the Ed: The readers might not.
Beverly: Fine. 26th October 1993. Heh. Younger than you [the Ed]. Hehe.
the Ed: Anything you wish to say to the world?
Beverly: God bless you.
the Ed: That's all?
Beverly: Yeah.. what else is there to say?
the Ed: I thought you can talk a lot..
Beverly: I can, but not much on me.
the Ed: So what you wanna talk about?
Beverly: I don't know...
*silence*
the Ed: Okay, what made you come to youth?
Beverly: Well I wasn't expecting anything, until I came for Youth Camp. That was really.. um.. y'know... life-changing. Youth service is a change from the adult service.. It's more... youthful, for youth. We have more people from our own age group there, unlike at the adult service. More friends..
the Ed: Okay, what's your favourite part in youth service?
Beverly: The worship.
the Ed: Great.. anything else you wanna add?
Beverly: Uh.. nothing..
*short silence*
the Ed: Okay, that's it I think, thanks very much!

Want more? Wait another.. two weeks (just in case someone in the world - starving child in Africa, perhaps? - didn't know what 'fortnight' means...).
